When the Power Goes Off, Why Do I Lose My Heat?

Written on: October 28, 2019

Power outages

If you lose your power on a cold night, one of the things you’ll miss most is the heat coming out of your vents or radiators.

That’s because heating systems will not run without electricity—no matter whether your fuel is heating oil, natural gas, propane or obviously, electricity. (Only some very old heating systems can operate without power).

Dealing with extended power outages

If your home is without power for an extended period of time, unplug appliances and turn off circuit breakers. This will prevent surges when the electricity returns.

Once you have your power back, make sure there is no standing water in your basement, especially if there has been a heavy rain storm. (Remember, a lack of power knocks out your sump pumps too). If your system requires service to get it started again, for safety reasons it cannot be worked on if water is pooling around it.

If flood water has reached your heating system, call your heating oil service provider to do an inspection before you restart it. The valves and controls are vulnerable to water damage—even if it cannot be seen. Corrosion begins inside the valves, and damage may not be apparent, even if the outside is clean and dry.

If the area around your heating system has remained dry, check that the system’s power switch and circuit breakers are back on before you try restarting your system. Remember not to press your unit’s reset button more than once. Pushing the reset button too many times can flood your system with oil, resulting in a costly repair.

Preparing for a power outage

If a big storm is on the horizon, there’s a strong possibility that you may lose power for a while. Here are a few tips to help you be ready.

Arranging for equipment service in the wake of a power outage

Since Lawman’s does not have a staff to offer this type of service, we look to partner with different HVAC companies to help our customers with this type of request. For our customers who live in Delaware or Pennsylvania, we have partnered with Wilson Oil & Propane because they have consistently proven to be our most reliable partner. They also treat our customers very well.

However, we have been unlucky to this point in finding a reliable HVAC company in New Jersey. We have tried different companies, but the service level has not lived up to our standards of customer service. If you know a good HVAC company in the Gloucester, Salem and Camden county area of New Jersey, please let us know and we will be happy to reach out to them.
