Greenville is where one of the most influential families in American history got its start.
Eleuthère Irénée du Pont was a French-American chemist who founded a gunpowder manufacturing company that became DuPont, one of the largest chemical companies in the world. Over the years, DuPont has developed a wide range of materials, including Lycra, nylon, Teflon, Mylar, Corian, neoprene and Kevlar.
The du Pont family assisted in negotiating the Treaty of Paris, which led to the end of the American Revolution. Later, they helped enable the Louisiana Purchase. Eleuthère’s descendants became prominent in society, business and government. They have been active in historic preservation, land conservation, and thoroughbred horse breeding and racing.
Henry A. du Pont, grandson of Eleuthère, graduated first in his class at West Point and won a Medal of Honor for actions that helped the Union win the Battle of Cedar Creek in the Civil War. He went on to serve two terms in the U.S. Senate.
Eleuthère’s great-grandson Thomas C. du Pont was the president of the family business before serving two terms in the U.S. Senate.
Henry A. du Pont’s son, Henry F. du Pont, became a premier breeder of dairy cattle. He was also an expert on Early American furniture and decorative arts and turned his family’s Delaware estate, Winterthur, into the Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library. Winterthur is home to one of the finest collections of Americana in the United States.
Pierre S. “Pete” du Pont IV served as a U.S. congressman and the governor of Delaware. He ran for the Republican nomination for President in 1988 but exited the race after a dismal finish in the New Hampshire primary.
