With energy prices still unbelievably high and overall inflation rates draining cash from our pockets every day, most people are trying to save money wherever they can. One thing you can do is to use this time to examine ways to conserve on your heat next winter.
There are actually many small yet important energy conservation methods that can add up to impressive savings. Here is a closer look at some of the steps you can take to improve your home’s energy efficiency.
Warm air rises, so if you have ceiling fans, especially in a part of your home that has high ceilings, run your fans in reverse to push the warm air down. This will keep your rooms more comfortable and will reduce your energy usage a bit too. It’s estimated that you can reduce your annual heating costs 2% by doing this.
Programmable thermostats allow you to set your temperatures so that you aren’t wasting energy when you aren’t home or are asleep. Today’s smart thermostats can be controlled remotely, giving you greater control over your energy usage. This relatively inexpensive investment can potentially cut your energy usage by at least 5%–sometimes even more!
Clear any unnecessary items in front of your baseboards, radiators or vents. Whether there are pieces of furniture in the way, a too-thick rug, or assorted kids’ shoes and toys on the floor, you’ll want this area to be clear so you don’t block the flow of heat into your home. And for safety’s sake, keep the area around your heating system as clean and clutter-free as possible. Never store anything flammable (paint, household cleaners, etc.) anywhere near your system–or any other heating appliance.
The most impactful action you can take is to replace your system with a new, higher efficiency heating oil furnace or heating oil boiler. While this will cost you the most, it will also save you the most. And depending on the age and condition of your current system, you may be able to cut your annual heating costs by 20% or more.
